From the Queen: Selecting the Second A&S Champion

Greetings unto the people of the MidRealm from your Tsar and Tsarina!

At this past RUM We held the first of Her Royal Majesty’s A&S challenges. We were excited to see how many people participated — 43 total entries, including six performances! We were overwhelmed by the amazing skill of the craftspeople of Our Kingdom! We saw everything from sugar paste to metalwork to food to illumination to a pair of period undies! In the end, it was Breddelwyn ap Taliesin who stood out with his inspiring tale as he accompanied himself on the harp. He is our Green Champion. Hoobah!

And now, it is time to select our second champion! The theme of the second challenge is “Heart.” As with the previous challenge, you are free to create any sort of entry that you believe best articulates “heart.”

From His Majesty on Thanksgiving Day

On this day of thanks I am thankful to you, the people of the Middle Kingdom. In our system of “rule by rattan” you have no say as to who your monarchs are. But once the tournament ends, you have absolute say if you embrace or ignore your King and Queen.

I are thrilled and overwhelmed with the love and support the Kingdom has shown Serena Kimbalwyke and myself. As first time royalty we have made our fair share of mistakes, but at every turn we are met with people who are willing to sacrifice their time and effort to support the reign and help “turn the crank” to make the SCA machine run smoothly. And best of all, everyone seems to be having a good time while they do it.

We will continue to work hard to live up to the faith you have placed in us. Thank you.

Her Majesty’s Reflections on RUM

The Royal University of the MidRealm is always an inspiring event full of amazing arts and wonderful teachers. This past weekend was no exception! Thanks to Katarina Helene von Schoenborn (Helen Schultz) and her staff for organizing and running such a great event. Thanks to RUM Chancellor Verena Entenwirth for organizing (and ruthlessly promoting!) a full day of wonderful classes and activities!

Call for Artwork for SCA 50 Year Program

Greetings to all from THL Azrael ben Shemhazai, publications chair for the SCA 50th Anniversary Celebration!

I’m working on the site booklet for next year’s event, and our goal is to create a true keepsake that shows off some of the best the SCA has to offer. To that end, I’d like both the cover and the internal art to showcase high-quality artwork, and I’m putting out a call to any scribes, illuminators or artists who’d like to lend their skills to this project.

I would like to thank those groups who submitted bids for Coronation this round.

A Reminder: Crown Tournament bids are due no later than Midnight ONE week from today! If you need additional time to finalize some details, you must contact me before the deadline so I know to expect a bid. Otherwise, I will go from the bids I have by the deadline.

From the Middle Kingdom Exchequer’s Desk: NMS Fees

Recently the Board of Directors discussed when NMS (non-member surcharge) fees are to be collected. We, the Kingdom Exchequers, have been asking questions about this interpretation, and we believe that we have an understandable document.

The Non Member Surcharge of $5.00 (five dollars) shall be collected at every Society, Kingdom or Local group event where:
1. The event is advertised in either the Kingdom Newsletter or the Kingdom website and/or a local newsletter or local web site
2. Where it is anticipated that the SCA’s insurance will be covering the Kingdom or local group and its officers/agents
3. Where a site fee (or suggested donation) is being charged for admittance.
Any participant who attends such an event who does not possess a valid membership card must be charged a $5.00 (five dollars) Non Member Surcharge (NMS) in addition to the site fee or suggested donation amount and that NMS shall be collected and submitted to the Kingdom Exchequer or their assigned deputy within 10 business days.  The Kingdom Exchequer is responsible for submitting the NMS for both Kingdom and local group events by the end of the following month.

September Heraldic Decisions for the Middle Kingdom

The September Letter of Acceptances and Returns has just been published. Here are the decisions for the Middle Kingdom. It can be found online here: http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2015/09/
Official notification will come out shortly to the submitters from the Opinicus Pursuivant, Jean Yves de Chierebourg. Look for an email form apache@sca.org; if you have items in submission you may want to add it to your address book as we have occasionally had issues with spam filters grabbing them. Please make sure to follow the link in the email as that lets us know that you have received the notification. (more…)

From the Society Exchequer Regarding Non-Member Surcharge

Limited exceptions to the NMS rule:

  1. Demonstrations– if the Kingdom or local group is hosting a demo at a school, a Renaissance Faire or some other gathering run by another organization (either for-profit or non-profit), the collection of NMS is not necessary; however, if the Kingdom or local group is either hosting or co-hosting the event and charging either a site fee or suggesting a donation, NMS shall be collected.
  2. Regular Occurring Meetings: No NMS need be collected at a weekly, monthly, quarterly or semi-annual re-occurring event, i.e. not at an officers meeting, a local group fighter practice, or regularly scheduled local arts & science meetings. If there is an officers meeting (or any other meeting or practice) at a published event charging a site fee or a suggested donation, this meeting/practice (as part of another event) does not negate the need to collect NMS.
