Greetings to all from your Kingdom Chatelaine! As we start a new year, brave the cold, and look forward to warmer months, it is also time for me to look for a replacement as Kingdom Chatelaine. It has been a fantastic couple of years working with the Kingdom, becoming a Great Officer of State, meeting and assisting countless newcomers and getting to know so many of you – thank you very much for this opportunity! I am still and will always be a Chatelaine.
The Chatelaine’s Office is responsible for helping develop, support, encourage and strategically create best practices for recruitment and retention within the Society for Creative Anachronism. Recruitment is central to the maintenance and growth of our Society, but also equally important, is the continued presence and participation of existing members.
The Chatelaine’s Office is therefore two-fold:
Recruitment – The Chatelaine’s Office helps to develop strategies to increase visibility, assist with marketing (i.e., recruitment flyers, business cards and informational materials). The Office provides guidance in the form of classes, handouts, and one-on-one contact with local Chatelaines to give them updates and to help facilitate communication. The Chatelaine’s Office is often the first point of contact for newcomers, and helps to match new participants with their local groups and local Chatelaine officers.
Primary to recruitment is the utilization of marketing. The Chatelaine’s Office is the key marketing agent of the Society, dealing directly with the public through the use of a variety of media, setting up demonstrations, working with the Media Relations Officer to ensure appropriate media coverage, as well as working internally to help manage volunteers and, as will be touched upon, membership retention. The Chatelaine’s Office works to utilize social media, websites and other digital media to make sure that the Society shares information easily, accessibly and quickly with potential newcomers.
Retention – The Chatelaine’s Office is keenly aware of the need to also focus attention on the continual participation of existing members. The Chatelaine’s Office looks to find ways to encourage the improvement of events and assists to find new opportunities for existing participants.
