First Tournament of the Greenwood – April 8, 2017

Please join us for our first Tournament of the Greenwood to be held on Saturday, April 8 in the Barony of Sternfeld at the Grand Pageant Tournament of Chivalry and Ball.

This is an open tournament for both archery and thrown weapons in which you may try your skills against a Forester of the Greenwood Company. There will be two lists: a duel list and a coaching list. In the Duel, challenge a Forester to a duel. There will be a set of fun and challenging targets from which to choose. Or, if you rather, invite a Forester to shoot with you just for fun and use that opportunity to get pointers. Learn what it’s like to shoot on the Champion’s team. Learn some tips and tricks to better improve your skills. If you make your own equipment, bring examples of your craftsmanship to share.

There will also be a round table called “Ask the Forester.” Sit down and have a chat. Talk about archery and thrown weapons, ask questions, get pointers on putting together a fun archer event, and more!

Official Missive from the Kingdom Exchequer

Greetings to all,

Thank you all for all of your hard work on behalf of your group and your kingdom. Each exchequer plays a vital role in keeping the modern side of our world running smoothly.

Just a few reminders –

Non-Member Registration (NMR) Reports and Remittances

Based on input from the current NMR deputy and a look at our process for collecting the NMR reports and remittances, we will be eliminating the “middle man.”

From now on, please send all NMR reports and remittance checks directly to me at the address on the Midrealm Exchequer page. This will allow me to collect the reports and complete my own report to Society in a timely manner.

We are almost completely caught up on our NMR reporting; however, I must reinforce the reporting schedule. NMR reports and remittances should be sent within 10 days of the end of the event. (more…)

Fall Crown Tournament Letters of Intent To Be Submitted by Coronation

All letters of intent to compete in Crown Tournament must be submitted to Their Highnesses by Their Coronation Day. Likewise, you must also contact me, the Kingdom Seneschal, electronically with the following items for both the consort and combatant by that same date: scans of government issued photo ID indicating age and physical address, scans of SCA membership cards showing membership good through the end of the reign, meaning September 2017. The combatant must provide armored combat authorizations via card or a link to the current authorization database. You may contact me at

Thank you,
Caitriona, Kingdom Seneschal

Missive From the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences

Greetings to all the Artists, Craftspersons, Researchers, and Scientists of the Realm!

I hope that if you attended Pennsic this year you were able to sample some of the fantastic classes, performances, and demonstrations that filled every day! And if you taught classes, performed, or did service to help A&S activities at Pennsic, thank you! I am always so proud of how many Midrealmers I see active in the arts and sciences at Pennsic, and always amazed to see all the varied pursuits we bring to share with one another.

Now Pennsic may be over, but September has some amazing events full of A&S goodness waiting for you: September 2-5 RUM RUSH in the Barony of Shattered Crystal, September 17 Botega at Three Towers, and September 24 Coronation, which will also feature Kingdom Craftspersons Faire!

Yours in Service
Halla of Mugmort

[Note: This letter was also published in the September issue of The Pale.]

Archery at Pennsic 45: Be the Arrow That Wins the War

One arrow.

Sometimes that is all that separates victory from defeat. Among the hundreds of shafts that flew at Hastings it took only one to strike Harold in the eye and cripple the English efforts to repel William’s invasion.
One arrow and the Normans took England. One fewer arrow and the English might have won.
One arrow is sometimes all that’s required, but that arrow needs an archer.
One arrow from one bow.
One arrow from one archer.
Be that archer, draw that bow, shoot that arrow, make a difference.

Yours might be the arrow that wins the war.

Your King and Queen need your help.  If you are going to Pennsic this year, please come up to the archery range and be that one arrow.  If you would like to do more, come to the Pennsic Champions practice/tryouts and try out for the team.  Tryouts are at 5:00 pm Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of war week.

In service to the kingdom,
Countess Aibhilin

Call for Pennsic Archer Champions

Greetings Unto the Archers of the Midrealm from Baniarla Aibhilin ni Dhomhnaill, Lt. General for Target Archery

Spring is finally upon us and with it comes Archery Season!!  If you are no lucky enough to have an indoor range, it is time to dust off those bows and pull out your arrows.  I am very excited to announce that we will be looking for candidates for the Pennsic Archer Champions team.  Yes, anyone can try out for the team.  To do so, all you need to do is practice, practice, practice and, of course, get to as many archery events as you can.  Check the Kingdom Calendar.  There are already a number of events scheduled that will have archery and in May there are two events that are focused solely on archery – Pentamere’s Archer College and Fletchings of Spring.

I am also strongly encouraging all archers to participate in the Seasonal Archery Challenge and the SPACS or the Middle Kingdom Royal Round.  The Seasonal Archery Challenge is Society-wide.  The current challenge is called “Piety or Pride” and the rules may be found here:  The SPACS and Royal Round are both Midrealm shoots, though the SPACS is open to all kingdoms.  Rules for both may be found here:

I would also like to take this time to announce our Regional Commanders.  These people will be attending archery events and collecting recommendations for the Champions team.  If you see any of them, please make sure to introduce yourself.  They will also be making themselves known to you.

Midlands: Sven Ivarsson

North Oaken: Forester Muldonny McVriw

South Oaken: Melissa Di Constantino

Pentamere: Lord Will O’hAnain
Sub-Commanders: Forester GenRose, Lord Wolfrick of Donnershafen

I do have an opening in Constellation that I would very much like to fill.  If you are interested, please send an email to

In Service to the Kingdom,

From the Middle Kingdom Exchequer’s Desk: NMS Fees

Recently the Board of Directors discussed when NMS (non-member surcharge) fees are to be collected. We, the Kingdom Exchequers, have been asking questions about this interpretation, and we believe that we have an understandable document.

The Non Member Surcharge of $5.00 (five dollars) shall be collected at every Society, Kingdom or Local group event where:
1. The event is advertised in either the Kingdom Newsletter or the Kingdom website and/or a local newsletter or local web site
2. Where it is anticipated that the SCA’s insurance will be covering the Kingdom or local group and its officers/agents
3. Where a site fee (or suggested donation) is being charged for admittance.
Any participant who attends such an event who does not possess a valid membership card must be charged a $5.00 (five dollars) Non Member Surcharge (NMS) in addition to the site fee or suggested donation amount and that NMS shall be collected and submitted to the Kingdom Exchequer or their assigned deputy within 10 business days.  The Kingdom Exchequer is responsible for submitting the NMS for both Kingdom and local group events by the end of the following month.
