Pursuivants

Kriemhilt promoted to rank of Herald Extraordinary

Done in Court with Their Majesties permission at Crown:

The College of Arms has a rank of Herald Extraordinary that has a long and honored history. The rank was formally created and defined in the 16th year of the Society by William Laurel. The intent of the rank is to recognize and reward “…those heralds who have greatly served the College of Heralds and/or the College of Arms and have achieved the highest level of competence in heraldry.”

In light of their considerable contribution to the Midrealm College of Heralds through service as Fenris Herald, Dragon Herald, Meadows Herald, deputy to the Pale Herald, and my own Emergency Deputy it is my pleasure as Dragon Principal Herald to confer the rank and style of Herald Extraordinary on Kriemhilt von Ebersberg and charge her to register a title of her choosing with the College of Arms.

Job Opening – Dragon Herald

Greetings unto the heralds, pursuivants, scribes, and populace of the Great Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander, Dragon Principal Herald.

Serving the Kingdom as Dragon Herald is something that I have wanted to do for a long time and I have greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to serve in this office and on Curia. As many have heard by now I have been chosen to be the next Baron of Red Spears and will be invested as such at Baron Wars on June 24th. Because of this, it is with a mix of joy and sorrow that I will be stepping down early as Dragon Herald. (more…)

June Dragon Herald Pale Letter

Greetings unto the heralds, pursuivants, scribes, and populace of the Great Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander, Dragon Principal Herald.

Serving the Kingdom as Dragon Herald is something that I have wanted to do for a long time and I have greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to serve in this office and on Curia. As many have heard by now I have been chosen to be the next Baron of Red Spears and will be invested as such at Baron Wars on June 24th. Because of this it is with a mix of joy and sorry that I will be stepping down early as Dragon Herald.

The position of Dragon Herald, in addition to its ceremonial duties (and privileges), is primarily an administrative and leadership position in the Kingdom and the Midrealm College of Heralds and Scribes. The ideal candidate must be a warranted herald with at minimum a working knowledge in ALL aspects of heraldry and heraldic offices, be very familiar with ceremonial protocol, and will be an organized individual comfortable with delegation and working with heralds and scribes of all levels, other Kingdom officers in Curia, and the Crown; including those from other Kingdoms. Past experience as a regional Herald or as other senior Dragon Staff member is preferred. This position is a direct report to the Crown and Laurel Sovereign of Arms of the Society.

Qualified applicants will have strong organizational, inter-personal, and written communication skills, and will be capable of tracking multiple tasks, deadlines, and of working efficiently with a large staff of deputies.

This position is a member of Curia and will advise the Crown on matters of the Kingdom. This position is also a member of the Kingdom financial committee, helping to advise on the use of Kingdom funds. The individual accepted for this position will assume the office by this coming Coronation in the Fall of AS LII (2017).

Applications should be submitted via e-mail to both me at herald@midrealm.org and Laurel Sovereign of Arms at laurel@heraldry.sca.org, and detail your skills and experience in the College of Heralds, in offices held in the Society and Kingdom, and/or mundanely if this will add to the well-rounded picture of your qualifications. Last but not least, please tell me why you want to be Dragon Herald and how you think you can add value by holding this office.

Applications are due by July 15, 2017.

New Rouge Scarpe Herald (External Submissions)

herald_75x75It is my pleasure to announce that Baroness Sybella of Dragon’s Mark will be taking over immediately as external submissions herald and thus succeeding me as Rouge Scarpe Herald. We will be working together on this months Internal Letter of Acceptance and Returns and External Letter of Intent as we transition.

The external submissions herald takes the internal commentary and makes the decisions at the Kingdom level as to what has to be returned at Kingdom level and what can go on the the Society level. They then create the Letter of Intent and process those submissions that move on to the Society level. This office comes with the heraldic title of Rouge Scarpe Herald.

I have greatly enjoyed serving as Rouge Scarpe Herald and I am sure Sybella Rouge Scarpe will as well. I look forward to working with her.

New Boke of Ceremonies

Greetings unto the heralds, pursuivants, and populace of the Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander, Dragon Herald,

I am happy to announce that there is a new revision of the Middle Kingdom Boke of Ceremonies available on the Middle Kingdom website.

My thanks to Thegn Edward Aelredson, my predecessor as Dragon, who oversaw most of the work and published a revision just before stepping down last month. Unfortunately once a number of needed updates were noticed. These and a few others discovered as we worked on it again have now been made.

Konrad Dragon

Here are the introductions from Edward from the May 2016 and myself from the June 2016 revision which cover most of the acknowledgements:

Most of what can be said here has been said by many of my predecessors.

“The Boke is a compilation of the more common ceremonies currently in use within the Middle Kingdom. This edition is really a revision of the previous version and we have corrected some errors, removed old ceremonies and added some new. It is not an all-inclusive collection of every possible ceremony, but rather a foundation from which to spring. While we have pulled out the alternative ceremonies that were found in the previous edition, we do strongly encourage writing of alternative ceremonies to fit the persona and/or taste of the recipient.”

The revision of this book was definitely not a solo project. I would like to thank Mistress Elena de Vexin for her contributions, review and commentary in the preliminary stages of revision. I would also like to thank Mistress Tyzes Sofia called Zsof, Master Dafydd Blaidd, Master Konrad Mailander, Baroness Maggie McKeith and THL Brynn Herleifsson for their contributions and assistance in applying the finishing touches to this manual. And lastly, HE Countess Alys Katharine for her superb proofreading skills. Any errors that remain are from after her proof-reading and are mine and mine alone.

Thegn Edward Aelredson

Because a few more eyes saw the May 2016 revision after it got published, there were a few things that were noticed that had not been updated. This update, which follows quickly on the heels of the previous version, fixes those areas. Primarily, a speaker from the Order of Defence was added into the other Peerage ceremonies. Also, the
suggested qualities that the Peerages attest to were standardized between the different Peerage ceremonies. And, because no herald can leave well enough alone, I made a few other edits. The ceremony for the creation of a Master of Arms has been changed so rather than refusing knighthood they are choosing to take the baldric of a Master of
Arms and the option for them to swear fealty has been added. My thanks go to, Chen-Shifu, Master Eirik Dweorgaxe, Duke Laurelen Darksbane, The Honourable Lady Petrona da Manciano, Master Rory mac Feidhlimidh and several Royal Peers for their input. And thanks again to Countess Alys Katharine for her proof-reading. Any errors that remain now fall on my shoulders.

Meister Konrad Mailander

From the Dragon Herald

Konrad, Dragon Herald

Konrad, Dragon Herald

Greetings unto the Midrealm College of Heralds and the populace of the Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander,

It was my great pleasure to take over the office of the Dragon Herald at the Coronation of Their Majesties Cameron II and Amaile II. I look forward to serving the Middle Kingdom in this position. My thanks and the thanks of the Kingdom go to Baron Edward Aelredson for his service over the last two years as Dragon.

The bittersweet aspect of stepping up as Dragon Herald is that I need to hand over the office of Rouge Scarpe Herald. Of all the offices I have held in the Society Rouge Scarpe so far has been the most rewarding. The Rouge Scarpe Herald is the Middle Kingdom’s External Submissions herald. Applicants need to have internet access, experience consulting on names and armory, and an understanding of the heraldic submission process. Experience commenting in OSCAR is a definite plus. The Rouge Scarpe Herald uses the commentary received on Internal Letters of Intent to make decisions on items at the Kingdom level and then creates the Letter of Intent in OSCAR for the Laurel level with the item that are accepted at Kingdom. Time commitment varies with the size of the Internal Letters with a large bulk of the workload after Pennsic (Pennsic has accounted for 36-56% of the years submissions over my time in the office). I will be taking applications until June 15th and choosing a successor shortly after.

I must announce that the prices for submissions are being rolled back to what they were a decade ago. Often such a roll back is a savings but unfortunately in this case that is not true.

With the savings created when the College of Arms went to the Online System for Commentary and Response (OSCAR) in 2007 the Laurel Sovereign of Arms was able to reduce what was charged at the Society level from $4 to $3. At that time this savings was passed on and the submissions fees in the Midrealm dropped from $8 to $7. Starting with the September 2016 Letter of Intent the charge for submissions at the Laurel level will return to $4 an item due to increased costs over the last nine years. The Middle Kingdom is on the lower end of the fees Kingdoms charge for submissions. Having more and more of the process happening online has allowed us to keep the Midrealm portion of the fees the same but does not leave us the room to absorb the price increase at the Society level.

Therefore starting with items submitted in July the cost of a heraldic submission in the Middle Kingdom will return to $8.00 each. Since the Middle Kingdom does not charge at the Kingdom level for Augmentations of Arms those will be $4.00 each starting in July. Resubmissions remain free of charge with no time limit. (July submissions go on the August Internal Letter of Intent which if accepted at Kingdom goes onto the September Letter of Intent at Laurel level.)

I encourage any who are currently considering registering their name, device, or other heraldic items to not wait and submit them to Escutcheon before July at the current prices.

There are a couple recent changes made by my predecessors that I would like to make better known:

There is no longer a time limit for resubmissions. When you make a resubmission please remember to include the date it was returned and whether it was returned at Kingdom or Laurel level, if you can. I would also like to state that with the adoption of SENA, the new rules for submissions, in 2012 and some recent rulings by Laurel a lot of things that conflicted in the past no longer will. It may be worth your time to ask a herald to conflict check it again under the new rules if you had a name or armory returned for conflict before 2012 that you are still interested in registering.

For those that have received Augmentations of Arms from the Crown the cost to register those with in the Middle Kingdom has been reduced as the Kingdom waves the Midrealm portion of the fees. Note that you must have a name and device registered to register the augmentation of arms, those items can be submitted along with the augmentation if need be but they are subject to the normal submission fee.

Konrad Dragon

Clerk of Precedence At Crown Tourney

Greetings!

By kind permission of Their Royal Majesties Cameron and Amalie, I will offer an on-site Order of Precedence correction desk at Their Crown Tourney on May 29. In the break following the conclusion of the Crown List and prior to evening Court, I will be available to perform immediate corrections to the Order of Precedence. • fix name spellings
  • combine multiple persona listings
  • update registration information
  • import awards from other Kingdoms to your current listing
  • remove duplicate awards
  • add omitted awards. In order to have awards added on-site, please bring a legible copy of the Court report as published in the Pale or a copy of your scroll. Additions requested without documentation will require off-site research.

In addition, I will happily teach folks how to use the OP to check awards.

My thanks to Their Highnesses and the Event Steward.
