June Heraldic Decsions

The June Letter of Acceptances and Returns was published while many of us were at Pennsic. Here are the decisions for the Middle Kingdom. The letter can be found online here:
Official notification will be sent to the submitters from the Opinicus Pursuivant. Look for an email form; if you have items in submission you may want to add it to your address book as we have occasionally had issues with spam filters grabbing them. Please make sure to follow the link in the email as that lets us know that you have received the notification.

Brigid inghean Mhaoil Mhíchíl. Name and device. Per pale sable and gules all estencely, a phoenix argent.
Submitted as Brigid inchean Maol Mhíchíl, the name required two corrections for registration. First, the relationship marker is correctly spelled inghean. Even taking into account the many odd spelling variants found in the Irish Annals, the submitted inchean does not appear and cannot be constructed.
Second, the father’s name needs to be in the genitive (possessive) form. The standard genitive form is Maoil Mhíchíl, which lenites to Mhaoil Mhíchíl in this name because it follows inghean.
Applying both of these changes, we are registering this name as Brigid inghean Mhaoil Mhíchíl.

Cole O’Doran. Name.

Cynnabar, Barony of. Order name Award of Elephants Heart.
This order name follows the pattern of naming orders based on Saint’s Name + Heraldic Charge. Elephant is a 16th century English surname that can be used as a given name.
The Barony requested the name Award of the Elephant’s Heart if it could be documented. Unfortunately, we were unable to document this version of the name, as an elephant’s heart is not a plausible heraldic charge. Apart from likely being larger than an ordinary heart, there is no distinct visual depiction of an heart that would identify it as belonging to an elephant.

Cynnabar, Barony of. Order name Award of the Silver Tower of Cynnabar (see PENDS for other order name).

Cynnabar, Barony of. Order name Order of Towers Watch.
Submitted as Order of the Watch of the Tower, we found no evidence showing that this name followed an attested period pattern for order names. With the Barony’s permission, we have changed the name to Order of Towers Watch to use the pattern of naming orders based on Saint’s Name + Heraldic Charge. Tower is a 16th century English surname that can be used as a given name. A watch, in the sense of a small time-piece (dated in the OED to 1590), is a plausible heraldic charge.

Genevote Cheval. Name and device. Vert, a horse couchant regardant Or, a bordure argent semy-de-lys vert.

Illiton, Barony of. Badge. (Fieldless) On a goblet Or a lymphad proper, sails furled argent.

Pellegrina da Canal. Name.

Ragna stórráða Úlfsdóttir. Name.
Submitted as Ragna stórráda Ulfsdóttir, the name required two corrections. First, markings must be used consistently throughout Old Norse names; therefore, the marking on the U found in Úlfr must be included in Úlfsdóttir. Second, the submitted stórráda mistakes an edh (ð) for a d. The correct form of the byname is stórráða. Applying these corrections, we are registering the name as Ragna stórráða Úlfsdóttir.

Siobhán an Einigh. Device change. Argent, on a pale azure between two triskelions of spirals purpure, an increscent argent.
There is a step from period practice for use of a triskelion of spirals.
The submitter’s old device, Per chevron throughout argent and azure, two triskelions of spirals purpure and an increscent argent, is retained as a badge.

Siobhán an Einigh. Badge. Argent, a pink flamingo proper within a bordure azure.

Úlfrún Biornsdóttir. Device. Azure, a unicorn and a wolf combatant and in chief a decrescent argent.

Veoreos Miklos. Name and device. Azure, an eagle sable and in chief a decrescent and a mullet of eight points argent.
Nice 16th century Hungarian name!
The submitter provided an Individually Attested Pattern successfully demonstrating the motif of a sable eagle displayed upon an azure field with high-contrast mullets and decrescents in chief.

Ailith the Kind. Augmentation of Arms. Per bend sinister wavy argent and vert, a thistle vert headed purpure and a garb Or and for augmentation on a chief purpure a compass star Or.
This augmentation must be returned for redraw. As submitted, the base device does not match the registered device; the entire head of the thistle is purpure, rather than just the petals on the top of the head. As the base devices do not match, the augmentation must be returned.
A compass star is a step from period practice.

Katarzina Celjska. Name.
This name was pended on the December 2016 Letter of Acceptances and Returns to allow discussion of whether Appendix C should be changed to allow combinations of North Slavic and South Slavic name elements. We did not receive sufficient commentary to justify changing Appendix C as it now stands on the issue. Thus, this name is not registerable as submitted because it combines a Polish (North Slavic) given name with a Slovenian (South Slavic) byname.

We would change the byname to the Polish Celjczowska, documented during commentary by ffride Joye Sans Fin, but this is a major change that the submitter does not allow.

Rüdiger of the Flaming Gryphon. Device. Per chevron vert and sable, two bears combatant Or and a tower argent.
This device was already registered on the February 2017 LoAR.

Job Opening: Rouge Scarpe Herald

Greetings unto the members of the Middle Kingdom College of Heralds from Meister Konrad Mailander, Dragon Herald,

Baroness Sybella needs to step down as Rouge Scarpe Herald and so that office is opening for applications.

Rouge Scarpe Herald is the external submission herald for the Middle Kingdom. They review the commentary made at the Kingdom level and made the decisions as to what goes on to the Laurel level and what needs to be returned at the Kingdom level. They then write a decisions letter and publish an External Letter of Intent each month on OSCAR, the Online System for Commentary and Response. They also correspond with submitters as needed to navigate issues with submissions.

Applicants should have experience consulting on names and armory and be familiar with the submission process and SENA (the rules for submissions). Experience commenting in OSCAR is helpful.

If you are interested, please send me your letter of intent by September 1st to:

From the Dragon Herald

Konrad, Dragon Herald

Konrad, Dragon Herald

Greetings unto the Midrealm College of Heralds and the populace of the Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander,

It was my great pleasure to take over the office of the Dragon Herald at the Coronation of Their Majesties Cameron II and Amaile II. I look forward to serving the Middle Kingdom in this position. My thanks and the thanks of the Kingdom go to Baron Edward Aelredson for his service over the last two years as Dragon.

The bittersweet aspect of stepping up as Dragon Herald is that I need to hand over the office of Rouge Scarpe Herald. Of all the offices I have held in the Society Rouge Scarpe so far has been the most rewarding. The Rouge Scarpe Herald is the Middle Kingdom’s External Submissions herald. Applicants need to have internet access, experience consulting on names and armory, and an understanding of the heraldic submission process. Experience commenting in OSCAR is a definite plus. The Rouge Scarpe Herald uses the commentary received on Internal Letters of Intent to make decisions on items at the Kingdom level and then creates the Letter of Intent in OSCAR for the Laurel level with the item that are accepted at Kingdom. Time commitment varies with the size of the Internal Letters with a large bulk of the workload after Pennsic (Pennsic has accounted for 36-56% of the years submissions over my time in the office). I will be taking applications until June 15th and choosing a successor shortly after.

I must announce that the prices for submissions are being rolled back to what they were a decade ago. Often such a roll back is a savings but unfortunately in this case that is not true.

With the savings created when the College of Arms went to the Online System for Commentary and Response (OSCAR) in 2007 the Laurel Sovereign of Arms was able to reduce what was charged at the Society level from $4 to $3. At that time this savings was passed on and the submissions fees in the Midrealm dropped from $8 to $7. Starting with the September 2016 Letter of Intent the charge for submissions at the Laurel level will return to $4 an item due to increased costs over the last nine years. The Middle Kingdom is on the lower end of the fees Kingdoms charge for submissions. Having more and more of the process happening online has allowed us to keep the Midrealm portion of the fees the same but does not leave us the room to absorb the price increase at the Society level.

Therefore starting with items submitted in July the cost of a heraldic submission in the Middle Kingdom will return to $8.00 each. Since the Middle Kingdom does not charge at the Kingdom level for Augmentations of Arms those will be $4.00 each starting in July. Resubmissions remain free of charge with no time limit. (July submissions go on the August Internal Letter of Intent which if accepted at Kingdom goes onto the September Letter of Intent at Laurel level.)

I encourage any who are currently considering registering their name, device, or other heraldic items to not wait and submit them to Escutcheon before July at the current prices.

There are a couple recent changes made by my predecessors that I would like to make better known:

There is no longer a time limit for resubmissions. When you make a resubmission please remember to include the date it was returned and whether it was returned at Kingdom or Laurel level, if you can. I would also like to state that with the adoption of SENA, the new rules for submissions, in 2012 and some recent rulings by Laurel a lot of things that conflicted in the past no longer will. It may be worth your time to ask a herald to conflict check it again under the new rules if you had a name or armory returned for conflict before 2012 that you are still interested in registering.

For those that have received Augmentations of Arms from the Crown the cost to register those with in the Middle Kingdom has been reduced as the Kingdom waves the Midrealm portion of the fees. Note that you must have a name and device registered to register the augmentation of arms, those items can be submitted along with the augmentation if need be but they are subject to the normal submission fee.

In Service to Crown and College,

Konrad Dragon
