Order of Defense Name, Badge, and Regalia Registered

Greetings unto all who read these words,

The Laurel King of Arms has just published a special Letter of Acceptances and Returns (LoAR) for the items related to the Order of Defense. I have clipped out a lot of the discussion of procedural stuff. Because the last peerage was created in 1972 and the first set of written rules for the College of Arms came out in 1982 there was not a lot of precedents or procedures relating to the registration of items for peerages and significant discussion revolved around that.

The information below is taken from both the cover letter and the acceptance letter. I recommend reading the entire LoAR.  If you would like to read the letter in its entirety it can be found here http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2015/04s/

Society for Creative Anachronism. Order name Order of Defense and badge. (Tinctureless) Three rapiers in pall inverted tips crossed.

Appearing in the Letter of Intent as Order of Defence, the preferred spelling is Order of Defense. The spellings defence and defense are used interchangeably in our period [see the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), s.v. defence]. We have changed the name to the desired spelling, with the caveat that both spellings are acceptable and can be used according to the desires of the kingdom and the individual companions of the order.

The badge of the Order is registered as tinctureless. We recognize that it has been long-standing policy to not register tinctureless armory outside of Herald’s Seals. However, given that the majority of the armory and regalia for the Peerage orders are tinctureless, we have afforded the same standing to the badge registered herein.

Society for Creative Anachronism. Regalia for Order of Defense. (Fieldless) A white livery collar.

Submitted as (Fieldless) A white livery collar, bearing the badge of the Order of Defence, commentary indicated that requiring to recognize a specific badge hanging from the collar would decrease identifiability of the members of the order.

The white livery collar is registered and protected as regalia only. Similarly to the laurel wreath of the Order of the Laurel, it is not registered as a badge and cannot be registered on armory for the members of the Order of Defense.

In acknowledgement of the diverse forms and ornamentation that livery collars may possess, we decline to specify a type for the Order, just as we do not specify anything beyond a white belt for the Order of the Chivalry. In order to be considered regalia, the collar itself must be white.

Much like the superprotection of the white belt as regalia for the Order of Chivalry does not prevent the populace from wearing belts of other colors or metal, the superprotection of a white livery collar for the Order of Defense does not mean that members of the populace cannot wear livery collars of another color or metal livery collars, including those made of silver.

****

The phrase Academy of Defense is a historical term used by fencing schools, and is used by multiple SCA branches to refer to both educational events and fencing practices. A registration of Order of Defense would “superprotect” the term Defense under NPN4B2 of SENA, preventing further uses of X of Defense and limiting the use of Defense in both non-personal and personal names in future registrations:

Order and award names may not include the names of the peerage orders or overt references to famous knightly orders such as the Garter. Other types of non-personal names may only use such elements in contexts where no reference to the order is likely to be perceived by members of the order and the general populace.

However, in acknowledgement of the traditions of excellence that many branches have displayed in educating their populace on period rapier combat, the SCA Board of Directors has granted permission for the use of Academy of Defense or Academy of Defence by any branch, and only branches, in the future.

****

We note the following acceptable styles for members of the Order: X, Master of the Order of Defense, and X, Master of Defense. On the question of post-nomial abbreviations (the practice of putting initials for awards behind one’s name), we decline to specify an abbreviation as this practice is post-period.

Border Skirmish A&S

Border Skirmish is looking for class instructors for the event, held in Elkhorn, WI (about 1/2 hour from the IL border) on Saturday, June 13th. The classes can be on any SCA subject and will be held in the building where the tavern is (same place as last year) about 5 min walk from the fighting.

Classes can be as long as you wish as long as they are held between 10AM and 4PM. There can be up to 3 classes in the building at the same time. The building has tables, chairs, electricity and water. If you would like to teach, please email  with a brief description of the class, preferred time, class length, fee and any limitations on the # of students, so it can be put on the event website.

There will also be two A&S competitions: one for laurels and one for non-laurels. The laurel competition will be a standard bean count where everybody can have the chance to choose the work they like best. The non-laurel competition will be judged by any laurels who choose to judge. Each laurel will get one vote for the work they like best. They will also get a sheet of paper for each item entered. On that sheet they can write what they liked about the entry and suggestions for improvement for the entry. Those sheets go back to the entrant.

The competitions will open at 10AM and close at 4PM. They will be in the same building as the classes. The prize for each will be an embroidered scroll. The plan is to award the scrolls at court.

There are no restrictions on what can be entered, laurel or non-laurel. Documentation is optional although it might be nice to get your documentation looked at by laurels. If you entered the A&S Faire, feel free to reenter the entry you liked best into this competition.

There will also be an area for A&S near the merchants where one can set up an area to work on their A&S or have a period day camp. If you would like to teach a class there, you can. However whatever you want to have their, you have to bring with you. That includes tent, tables, chairs, etc. It’s basically just going to be a stretch of grass – which is pretty period.

Pennsic Queens’ Favor Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial

favorPay heed, good gentles of the Middle Kingdom, for we have been charged with a task from on high. Princess Arabella and her counterpart in the East, Princess Etheldreda, wish to mark the solidarity of Their two kingdoms as we approach war with AEthelmearc this summer. To that end, They are asking the populace of both Kingdoms to create favors and They have chosen a design that features the mighty dragon of the Middle Kingdom and the fierce tyger of the East, as was reported in February by our friends at the EastKingdomGazette.org.

To further this mission and encourage anyone who is willing to contribute, I created a step-by-step photo tutorial showing how to make the Queens’ Favor from start to finish for members of my barony. Those outside my barony have inquired about it, and so, with Her Highness’s approval, I include it here on the new Midrealm Gazette so that any group or individual wishing to contribute may do so. If you create a favor on your own, you may mail it to Baroness Una (with enough time to arrive well before Pennsic 44) to the address listed here:

Grand Tournament of the Unicorn updates

Good evening, all! Ameline Rossi, Event Steward, come bearing numerous items of interest concerning Grand Tourney of the Unicorn, including PRE-REGISTRATION, PARKING, and HOTELS!

  1. Pre-registration is open at ACCEPS now! Pre-registration will be open until April 11, 2015–by pre-registering you’ll not only speed up the troll-in process, but also receive $2 off entry.
  2. Miami University requires you to have a permit at all times while parking on campus. This year, rather than picking them up at troll, you can download the permit from the GTU website and print it out prior to leaving home! We will still have permits available at troll as well, but you are welcome to print them out prior to save time and hassle.
  3. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Springhill Suites just off of I-275. It’s about 30 minutes away from Oxford, but with everything going on around the area that weekend, it’s the closest we could get. Here’s the hotel’s website; its address is 12001 Chase Plaza Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45240. Mention “SCA,” “GTU,” or “Unicorn” to get our room block, which is $92/night (including complimentary breakfast!). The hotel’s phone number to reserve is (513) 825-9035. You must call to get into the Unicorn room block. As always, we are still looking for both CLASSES and MERCHANTS! Contact Cayla Brakers for classes and Louis Krieger for merchanting.

New forms for Heraldic submissions

Greetings unto the Middle Kingdom College of Heralds and the populace of the Middle Kingdom from Meister Konrad Mailander, Rouge Scarpe Herald,

The Middle Kingdom has just issued new forms for heraldic submissions. Starting on April 1st any submissions received must use the new forms or they will be returned and new forms requested. These new forms are now the ones available on the Midrealm Herald Website: http://www.midrealm.org/heraldry/

Please discontinue the use of all old forms. The new forms should have Laurel v. 3.0; Middle v1.0 (Laurel Approved 10 Dec 2014) at the bottom of the form and “v3_rev1” as part of the file name.

The previous forms will be accepted until the end of March so if you have a submission worked up that you have not yet sent in you want to send them off to the Escutcheon Herald immediately to avoid having to redo them on the new forms.

Please pass this missive on to your groups.

In Service I Remain,

Konrad Rouge Scarpe

Heraldic Notifications Backlog

Greetings Lords and Ladies of the Midrealm.
I hope this missive finds you well, as many are returning from the War in the Southern Lands. I am the Heraldic Submissions Deputy for the Middle Kingdom. As I finished notifications this morning, I noticed quite a large number of notifications that have not yet been retrieved. If you have made a heraldic submission in the last year or so and your email username is in the list below, you have an unretrieved notification. Many of these have ended up in Gentle’s Spam Folders due to the sender name being “Apache” if you could please check your notifications, or get back to me offline to let me know I can delete the unretrieved notification, I would be greatly appreciative.

Below is a list of email usernames (its how the College sorts them on the notifications pages) of notifications not yet retrieved.
